about

"In the late afternoon when I look at the Sun, our white-hot yellow star blazing in the bluest of skies over our remnant Texas prairies, I get a new sense of space and time.
And again I realize how potent, powerful and fragile this tiny blue-green Earth is..
And how blessed by God we are, and how awesome our duty is.."
-Jarid Manos

Back in 2006 I read about the efforts to preserve a 2000 acre tract of pristine prairie land, situated in south Fort Worth between Benbrook Lake and Old Granbury Road. The land, a practically untouched native ecosystem, is a breeding and resting ground for Monarch butterflies, as well as migratory birds. Author/activist Jarid Manos had been working with Fort Worth officials, and the General Land Office-which was holding the land for eventual sale to fund schools-to protect
and preserve it, in hopes of it becoming the Fort Worth Prairie Park.

Out of curiosity, I drove out to the area and was struck by all the development and construction that had taken place since I'd been there last, only several months before. Eventually I met up with the good people of the Great Plains Restoration Council, founded by Manos,
and was able to participate in several hikes on the property throughout 2013, and fell in love with the place. But recently, the Land Office's sale to a Canadian development company barred further access to the hoped for Park, and it looks like that beautiful land may fall to the same fate as much of the rest of the Texas prairie land..

Inspired by my initial impressions of the development around that area, and the plight of wild, historical spaces in general, I wrote a song called Wildflower Way. After several attempts and false starts to record the song, it has finally become a reality and I present it to you, my friends and family of old Earth. I hope in some small way sales of the song
can benefit organizations who are trying to preserve the last remnants of Texas' wild prairie.

Please give the song a listen, and if you like it, buy the download. All proceeds, after bandcamp fees, will go to organizations working to preserve our remaining prairie lands.

I would like to thank Darrin Kobetich, for providing the blazing mandolin track, and Billy Gray for the excellent drum work. Also thanks to Glenn Milam for recording the drum track at his studio!

The song was mastered by Steve Mark of Applause Audio/Video in Arlington, Tx., good job, Steve!

lyrics

Wildflower Way

I went for a drive, down by the lake
To see what I could see.
And it looked nothing like
It did before
When I went a year previously.
There were houses and stores
And a gas well or three
Where before had been lone prairie..
Now there's a tumor growin', a blight on the land
As far as eyes can see.
Now the prairie dog and songbird and the buffalo
Have all but gone away
Will there be nothing left for my kids to enjoy
When they walk down the Wildflower Way..

Somewhere out in that grassy field
Is a rock wall built by Texas slaves
And over that hill is a burial ground
With pioneer family graves.
And I wish I could go back in time and live
In that old farm house on the hill..
Will you tear it down and pave it over
To build us a road
To the almighty dollar bill

Now the prairie dog and the songbird and the buffalo
Have all but gone away
Will there be nothing left for my kids to remember
When they walk down the Wildflower Way..
